What did Santa Clause bring you for Christmas?

My mother gave my wife and I a Garmin GPS. This is really nice for rooting out the places we need to go to in Indianapolis, rather than googling a map, printing it, bringing it along (or forgetting it) and trying to read it while driving. The GPS talks and says when to turn. Fantastico!

My wife got me an auto-darkening welding helmet. I dabble in automotive hobbies, mostly 4 wheel drive off-road stuff, so I have a couple of welders. Recently I took a TIG welding class and used their auto darkening helmet. It allows you to see what you are welding, before you start. Then, it senses the light from the welding and quickly darkens the lens as you weld. It does this by LCD.

For my wife, I got her some speakers for her Grand Cherokee.

December 11, 2008 (IDG News Service) Chinese security researchers mistakenly released the code needed to hack a PC by exploiting an unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) browser, potentially putting millions of computer users at risk -- but it appears some hackers already knew how to exploit the flaw.

At one point, the code was traded for as much as $15,000 on underground criminal markets, according to iDefense, the computer security branch of VeriSign Inc., citing a blog post from the Chinese team.

The problem in IE7 means a computer could be infected with malicious software merely by visiting a Web site, one of the most dangerous computer security scenarios. It affects computers running IE7 on Windows XP, regardless of the service pack version.

Microsoft has acknowledged the issue but has not indicated when it will release a patch.

Mga master! may problema po kami ngayon baka pwede naman kami makahingi ng openion o solution kaya. Ang Distro na gamit namin ehh Red Hat kaya lang di ko sure yung version. Ang problema na nakita ko is nag hung yung pagboot ayaw may load ng kernel. try kung boot yung GRUB using Runlevel 1. ang message naman na appear is " Kernel Panic: no initd found" saan po kaya pwede gagalawin pa kasi kailangan talaga po yung libux box na yun nakarelay kasi doon ang mga emails nila...

Other option po : incase na di na magagawa yung error na kernel panic, up posible po ba na kung mag setup ako ng new Linux 5 box at slave ko yung HDD noon possible ko bang mai- mount at maback up yung files nya para lang makuha ang mga conf file?. Pwede ko bang malaman pano ang command para sa mount ng ext HDD.

Meron po bang naka-experience sa inyo na dual boot with Windows Vista and Ubuntu tapos bigla na lang pag boot eh di na makita yung system drive ng Vista. Ganito po kasi ang nangyari habang naglalaro ako biglang nag blue screen so nag-warm boot ako to verify kung ok pa yung system which is ok pa naman after ng warm boot. After ko po magperform ng cold boot eh di nakita ung system drive. Nag run ako ng vista installer tapos select ko yung command prompt option. Ni type ko ung C: ang lumabas eh isa sa mga data partition at hindi yung system drive.

Ang setup ng hard drive ko po ay SATA 0: Windows Vista, SATA 1: Ubuntu, SATA 2: Data Hard drive.

#1: Installing applications from various types

This might not seem like such a bad idea at first. You are running Ubuntu so you know the package management system uses .deb packages. But there are a number of applications that you find only in source form. No big deal right? They install, they work. Why shouldn’t you? Simple, your package management system can’t keep track of what you have installed if it’s installed from source. So what happens when package A (that you installed from source) depends upon package B (that was installed from a .deb binary) and package B is upgraded from the update manager? Package A might still work or it might not. But if both package A and B are installed from .debs, the chances of them both working are far higher. Also, updating packages is much easier when all packages are from the same binary type.

The choice of Ubuntu is due to its ease of use as a desktop OS and the availability of Edubuntu.”

Still, Ubuntu has not made the leap from Xavier’s desktops to servers. “Our servers are mostly Linux-based, though most of the run Red Hat or CentOS. Red Hat is required by IBM for a supported installation of Lotus Notes.”
